Dining Out – How to Save Money When Dining Out

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Individuals, couples and families enjoy dining out from time to time to enjoy different food and also the different atmospheres that restaurants have to offer. People would probably dine out a lot more if it weren’t so expensive. It is much cheaper to prepare meals from home but it’s also great to get a break from time to time.

Dine out frequently at places that offer some kind of membership card or other perks. Some places will have membership cards that will allow you to earn points or free items once you accumulate enough you can trade the points in for food items.

If you have a credit card that offers rewards or cash back at certain restaurants be sure to use it every time you dine out. While it may not seem like much at first you’d be surprised how much money you can save by using a credit card that offers rewards.

To save money on the actual meals consider sharing a meal with another person. The serving sizes at most restaurants is huge and usually plenty of food for two people. This way you won’t have to worry about taking home leftovers and trying to eat them reheated. They just don’t ever taste as good as they did when the food was fresh.

If you can order from the children’s menu that would also be a good option. Their meals are always cheaper but some places don’t have a children’s menu or may not allow you to order from it but it’s always worth a try if it can save you a few bucks.

Another way to save money on dining is to watch out for coupons in your local paper. Each week you’re likely to find coupons for at least one restaurant. If you aren’t noticing any real good coupons you could also check online. The restaurant’s website may offer special deals and printable coupons that you can bring with you when dining out.

If the restaurants you visit have some sort of e-club or e-newsletter to sign up for you can get some really great savings this way that other people won’t have access to. They’ll periodically send out special offers only to their current subscribers.

Saving money while dining out really is pretty easy especially if you have restaurants nearby that offer memberships, reward cards, coupons and/or newsletters. And don’t forget that you can cut the cost of any dinner in half by sharing a meal with another person.

How Blogs Can Make You Money

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

So, What is a “Money Making Blog”?

OK, that’s when someone stops me and says,”What’s a Blog?”

So, Lets start at the beginning!

Blog Basics

A blog is sometimes called web log or weblog. It is a type if online journal or diary, often including personal comments as well as web links and images. Many people keep a blog as a type of personal creative exercise, but you can easily use this popular online type of writing to market your business. Blogs are very popular right now and they can be a great and inexpensive way to contact more customers.

The great thing about blogs is that people read them for fun. Customers may be becoming more jaded about advertising, but they will gladly read a blog that has some interesting things to say. Many top companies are using blogs to deliver a better and more personal message about their companies – and the strategy seems to be working.

Starting a Blog

Starting a blog is as simple as finding a space online to write – and the time to write. To begin a blog, first develop a theme idea or blog idea. You may want to look at other people’s blogs to do so. In general, you will want to develop a central theme for your blog in the same way that columnists develop a theme for their articles. This helps ensure that your blog is not too “scattered.”

Next, find some place to publish your blog. There are a number of sites – both paying and free – that give bloggers a chance to publish their material. You may also want to simply set up your blog on your web site, especially if you already have an active web site.

Writing Your Blog

Once you have a place to publish your blog, you will have to set aside some time each week to develop new content. When writing your blog:

oWrite simply and clearly. Use small paragraphs and spell check before uploading. Your readers will trust what you have to say if you say it well.

oGo easy on the advertising. The idea of a blog is to give readers something fun and exciting to read and look at. You will have more readers if you comment on the world and are entertaining, rather than just hype your product. Consider writing about your day, the atmosphere your workplace has, and culture, rather than just your company.

oConsider many types of content. Blogs allow you to upload images, create links, and allow users to make comments. Your blog will have many more readers if you make your blog exciting with these pluses.

Promoting Your Blog

Just putting your blog online is not enough. After all, there are many millions of blogs on the web right now, so unless your blog is on a high-traffic site, you may not get readers unless you advertise. You can easily advertise your blog without spending a cent by mentioning your blog in your emails and web pages or newsletters. You can also enter in online competitions – if your blog wins a prize you are more likely to get a constant flow of traffic to your blog. You can also ask ezines and other content providers to review your blog, which will also draw readers.

Blog Marketing Ideas That Sell

Once you develop a blog, you will want to use the best blog marketing strategies you can to sell your company. However, marketing blogs are different from personal blogs and blog marketing or advertising is very different than other forms of marketing.

Make Your Blog a Customer Draw

In order to make your blog a powerful marketing tool, you need to get your customers and clients to see it. That means that you will need to advertise and provide content that gets attention:

oMake your blog visually exciting. Choose an attractive background colour and provide photos or images. Consider sound. Develop your blog as you would a web site, with the same visual appeal. Some bloggers even add video and sound to their blogs. There is no need to spend many hours composing art works, but know that simple text on a white background may simply not draw as many readers as you like.

oMake sure that your customers know that your blog exists. Providing some targeted advertising on the Internet is not hard. Try some link exchange programs with web sites, blogs, and ezines that have similar content to your blog. In many cases, simply providing a link to another web site can convince that web master to provide a link to your blog.

Make Your Blog a Company Pusher – Without Being Pushy

Your blog needs to promote your company. However, if you are too heavy-handed, you will not be terribly exciting and may push customers away. That’s why you should aim for only a small amount of content that actively pushes your company. Do suggest newsworthy items that will lure your readers in. For example, writing “today we launched a new division – now expecting mothers can take advantage of our fashions” is much better than sales copy such as “buy our hot new maternity fashions now.”

Give Your Readers What They Want

Studies suggest that as many as a quarter of Internet users tune into blogs. That means that if you can give your blog readers what they want, you can be reasonably sure of having a decent audience. Among the content that you may want to include in your blog:

oTips and advice. Many successful marketing blogs are much like successful consumer magazines – readers tune in to read content that is useful. A computer company can offer computer tips and advice, for example, while a writing service blog can include daily ways to boost writing skills.

oInterest. If your personal or business life is fascinating, then great. There are many successful marketing blogs that detail the exciting lives of company presidents who are also hobby racecar drivers or skydivers. This sort of material can ensure a steady audience.

oHumanity. One of the things that blog readers are most interested to see is the face behind the company. Many blog readers like a company run by people who have similar concerns. Building humanity into your blog by detailing your company’s efforts to help the community, for example, is a great way to build credibility and customer loyalty.

oStyle. Many readers just love to see a gorgeous, well-written blog. Plenty of marketing blogs simply provide interesting content and nice graphics and do quite well in drawing readers and customers.

Get More Readers for Your Blog, Get More Customers

There are several ways to make your blog one of the “hot” blogs online. Traditionally, those companies that have the largest star-power have had the most popular blogs, since everyone loves to read about celebrity or success. However, a great many smaller companies and individuals are developing large followings on the web. You can, too, with this simple lesson.

Keep it Rich

Keyword-rich, that is. Blogs are a great way to generate keyword-rich content, especially if you update your blogs each day. In fact, for some smaller businesses, blogs make more sense than hard-to-create web pages. Blog software makes creating a blog almost automatic while the spiders on search engines seem to favour high-quality and often updated keyword-rich blogs.

Steps to take:

oKeep keyword content high with plenty of keywords. As you write your blog entries, do try to use not only keywords having to do with your topic, but also synonyms for your keywords. This will help your readers find you more easily on the Internet. For example, if you offer discount fashions, use a variety of keywords, including “discount fashions,” “cheap designer wear,” “discount clothing” and others.

oProvide quality, often-updated content.

oSpecialize. The best way to make use of the search engine optimisation of blogs is to narrow your focus. Rather than developing a hodgepodge of ideas and themes, write with one theme in mind. It will help ensure that people looking for information on your topic will always find you through a search engine.

Join the Community

Make sure that you promote your blog by joining the blogging community. Creating a larger presence for your blog online will result in more blog readers and possibly, more customers:

oAdd the address for your blog to email signatures and include mention in any ezine or email newsletter you have to let readers know about your blog.

oMention your blog on appropriate forums. For example, if your company offers resume writing services, consider writing about your blog in job-hunt forums.

oAllow for readers’ commentary on your blog. Many online blog publishing programs already allow this. If your readers can post their comments and read the comments of other readers, they are more likely to return to your blog regularly, and so keep your company name in mind.

oMake your blog searchable through your interests. Many blog programs allow you to create a user profile, which allows readers to search for you and your blog by interest topic and locations, in many cases. Do not overlook this simple way to draw readers. Simply fill out your profile, taking care to use many “interests” to attract more readers and browsers.

Who’s Protecting Our Children?

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

As I reread this article that I posted in 2007, albeit little has changed regarding my view of co-dependency, such a deeper understanding of the harm the co-dependent creates for it-self and the depend was revealed.

“O” you don’t like that? But it’s good for you” Most children have no concept of what is good for them, in fact with out an incentive towards good health, most kids could care less. All kids want is what they like, and if you tell them they don’t like something, as the above scenario demonstrates, you set them up to fail.

We create; we mold their behavior with our demeanor and what we model for them. If you wish for a child to do the right thing, model the behavior, give them no other option but to do the right thing.

If they refuse to eat the veggies, then always put them on their plate, and nothing else. When the veggies are gone, allow them to eat, within reason, whatever more they like. Kids will not let themselves starve, but if you are foolish enough to allow them to, they will play on your emotions.

After raising two daughters with a co-dependent who did not support my efforts, but rather undermined all I did, I then remarried. With this woman’s support we raised two foster kids together, until the system felt their drug abusing parents finally had the minimal amount of clean time in order to try their hand at parenting again.

After this, rather gut wrenching, but rewarding experience, I then wrote the following article.

“Who’s protecting Our Children?”

There should be as many different techniques to raise children, as there are different types of children. Because each child is as different as a finger print, I do not believe that anyone has the perfect solution. I am not sure what truly works with all children, but I do know what does not work with all children.

The old school phrase, ‘Spare the rod, spoil the child’ I believe is often taken out of context, many don’t seem to have a clue. It has been my observation that many have the misconception that children are born naive, and it’s their environment which turns their hearts rebellious.

The source of our being whom I chose to call “God” said let the little children come to Him because I believe He knows that children learn how to manipulate at a very young age. Think about it, when we were infants what did we do when we were hungry? And what was the payoff? Manipulation became our survival. So what works as an infant, if allowed to continue, sets a child up to fail in the real world. When was the last time your boss gave you a raise for whining?

Therefore, their further development must be done by the loving exorcism of one rogue spirit at a time. First we must rid ourselves of the rude and crude MTV mindset that feeds our children’s psychosis!

I believe the rod of correction is God Himself, and without Him as our ethical guide, children will continue their wave of chaos. The Scriptures continue to say, a father who refuses to discipline his child does not love his child. I will add to this sentiment; that any one who refuses to remain faithful to his child’s other parent, does not truly love their child.

Our Creator has made caring for an infant relatively easy. However, it has been my observation that the skills required to raise a productive member of a society requires a strong resolve. A resolve that not all have obviously been granted!

If a parent/guardian, or P/G for short, is unwilling to follow through with a sanction imposed on a child, they are an unauthorized authoritarian, or U/A. Children require consistency and protection from themselves and others. Period!

God plants His seed in each child at conception, however, it is for the P/G to allow Him to nurture that very small seed and remove the weeds that choke it. Every garden has weeds that must be removed.

I have never known a two year old that did not think he was the boss of the house at some point in his development. However, I have witnessed too many P/Gs feed this chronic monster! It is no wonder why most women today dread taking their kids to the store, between the media and co-dependent role models most kids act like monsters in public. They know you will not swat them in public, because they know you fear reprisal.

Hey, if a kid who thinks he is the boss of my home steps to far over the line after being warned, he or she gets a swat on the leg. If the child tells me they are going to tell on me, they get handed a phone.

Soon after a child begins to have cognition that they are separate entities from their mother, sexual desires and violent behaviors begin to manifest themselves that demand they begin to manipulate for the control of everything and everyone around them.

Because havoc sells products, the media is designed to continue this rebellion through televised visions of soft porn, vanity, greed, and violent entertainment. These products compounded with an alcohol and other drug epidemic is the root cause of infidelity, thus, the root cause of divorce, and divorce is the leading cause of children becoming unruly!

Divorce or the lack of both, a male and a females direct involvement in a child’s development is a slow death for children. Any uncertainty causes both, mental and physical harm to children.

Divorce is the root cause of children being sexually exploited and neglected. Most men have difficulty sexually exploiting a child who’s been under his protection from birth. However, a stepfather, or a live in boyfriend is rarely granted a healthy bond with a step-child. In fact statistics tell us that 85% of step fathers will sexual exploit a step child.

Therefore, as long as women are encouraged, almost expected to dress promiscuously on the street or even seen on TV parading around in their underwear, young men’s hearts will continue being led astray from the security of a one man and one woman lifestyle, and the young boys learn that women are to be sexually exploited further.

As long as our society allows the sexual exploitation of people, people will allow themselves to be sexually exploited. If we allow our daughters to dress like whores, they will be treated as such, and they and their children will continue to suffer grave sexual improprieties!

Many appear to have the misconceptions that gays and lesbians are living in defiance of their Creator. It has been my observation their defiance is often the byproducts of others lack of sexual boundaries, or these have received improper guidance that has encouraged their unnatural behavior and desires. Therefore, gay lifestyles are not a choice, but rather, are a social mental health illness issue that can, and should be treated as such.

Gays and lesbians are not bad people, but rather, any form of gross sexual impropriety is destructive to everyone influenced by it. Therefore, just as substance abusers and U/As must not be allowed to raise children, nor should anyone living an extremely unnatural lifestyle.

The Scriptures make it very clear that the pain of anything unnatural will visit the children to the second and third generations! Therefore, no matter how much the liberal mindset hollers, we all know what unnatural is or there would be no debates!

U/As often give children what they want, and too often not what they need. Children will always love their mentors, good, bad, or indifferent, however, if their role model wishes for a child’s respect, they will give them what they need; protection from the influence of this, a dysfunctional world, and protection from societies misplaced ideals.

If children are not taught to love themselves through self respect, they will not learn to respect the views of those who disagree with them, thus will not learn to respect God, thus, recreating more shame and uncertainty for themselves. Children must be taught to love, even for those who they do not respect their views.

It appears that many U/As wish to be a child’s buddy first, so the role of disciplinarian is often compromised by confusing boundaries. First earn a child’s trust, only then can you call yourself a parent who has earned your child’s respect.

Some children appear to learn by redirecting them towards more appropriate behavior. However, others only appear to understand a consequence for inappropriate behavior. Our job is to realize the difference in the multi personalities our Creator presents to us.

Fear and boredom appear to be another cause of chaos in children. Therefore, one of the most difficult aspects in aiding any unruly person towards compliance is learning the art of thinking ahead of them. This allows one to think ahead by what is said, and the message that children hear.

However, it is often difficult for a prideful man to maintain a calm demeanor while disciplining a child. The gift of patients is not granted to everyone, and certainly not always to me, but this, more than anything else is what prevents one from becoming unruly themselves.

Utilizing violence to control children only teaches children violence to control others, thus should only be used as a last resort. Time outs appear to be effective, but often do carry much weight with all types of people. The new age philosophy calls for time in’s.

Yes, I agree that it is extremely important to keep kids close to us; however we must never reward poor behavior even when we know the child is misbehaving because they want our attention. One must try different methods to find the one that helps teach children to get what they need without becoming unruly, or the child will use unruly exclusively.

However, black and blue will never do, whereas, love and calm words of encouragement and, if the child will not hear the voice of reason, as a last resort a little hot pink given by a loving hand on a clothed backside will service a self-willed child quite well, but only if reinforced with a loving explanation. Do not fear reprisal from social services, but do fear a child who does not learn to control their emotions or disrespects themselves or others!

As soon as a child learns to clean-up their own messes, they quickly learn not to make them. A parent who continues to clean-up their children’s messes, or denies the existence of the mess, will always be cleaning up their children’s messes.

There is a fine line between abuse and admonishment, co-dependency and compassion. However, it has been my observation that many people do not appear to realize that over-indulgence and co-dependency is child abuse!

Again, the bottom line for children is; ‘Never reward poor behavior’ I have lived long enough around kids to witness those who have refused to hold their children accountable for naturally occurring inappropriate behavior have often witnessed their children labeled adult/children, or A/C, and in handcuffs.

If a child’s consequence for improper behavior is more painful for the P/G than for the child, the child is being nurtured, thus allowing them to produce healthy children of their own. Our Creator will hold each of us accountable for what we teach our children!

Many children are lead by society’s misplaced ideals they have rights they do not have to earn. Many of the A/C I have worked with in recovery centers grew up with the misconception they have the right to drive a car, and to live as they wish. Most had been allowed to be the bosses of their homes. Comprehending the word “No” was often not apart of their vocabulary.

Because there are so many children from broken homes or have been raised by U/As, our brat camps, recovery centers and prisons are quickly being filled to their maximum capacity, with little resources to build more, or qualified people willing to staff them.

It has been my observation that most children must be taught to realize the difference between rights and privileges. They must be taught that privileges can be removed if not respected. A safe environment, physical and mental nourishment are children’s only rights.

When children are not taught to earn privileges, they become complacent, and complacency often lasts a life time, making the child’s life difficult into their adult years.

The problems we face when we belittle children is, one day they will believe the insults are true and belittle others to feel better about them selves. If P/Gs do not learn to express their differences in a productive manner, children learn to do the same. Therefore, before you act out in frustration, ask God for intervention.

Children who are not taught how to express their emotions in appropriate ways often grow-up to be violent A/C. It has been my observation that P/Gs who raise children, A/C are the byproduct. However, those who raise children to be responsible for their behaviors, produce healthier adults.

P/Gs must learn to see around the corner! They must realize that if a child discovers a tactic to get their own way today, they continue to use that same tactic tomorrow. Therefore, P/Gs who allow children to raise themselves, do not realize the impact of self-will.

Those who continue to teach their children they are not created by divine intervention, but by chance, will continue wondering why many children behave like unloved rabid animals.

Therefore, any media that teaches children blatant disregard for law and order through violent video games, and the like, must be forced to educate P/Gs of the pending dangers, or it is they who must fund social service programs, and provide the treatment centers for the unruly they have created. And the producers of pornography, vanity products and their advertisements must be held accountable for all mental health and sexual crimes that are committed against our children!

Men protect your daughters, even from their sibling’s sexual advances. Stop your sons from striking their siblings at a very early age, or you may be the one he learns to strike! Women teach your daughters to respect themselves. If you dress like a whore, your daughter will learn the same, thus, leaving on open invitation for sexual deviancy.

Fear not a child who does not like you, but fear a child who does not respect you! It is never too late in the day to start over with an unruly A/C. However, it must first start with you! Ask your unruly A/C to forgive you for being a U/A. Explain your mistakes. Ask God to heal the wounds inflected by your poor management skills.

When your children see you, do they see you as God’s representative on this earth? The main theme of God’s written word teaches parenting skills. After all, Who has more strong willed brats than our Creator?

If we wish to view a society’s dysfunction, view its children, as children only mimic what they witness! Again; raise adults, not children, or your off-spring will raise A/C!

I now wish to share that deeper understanding, and the endless possibilities.

What You Need to Know About Cat Food

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Cat Food Info #1 Cats Need Protein in their Cat Food

The cat food you feed to your cat should always be rich in protein. This generally should come from meat, poultry or fish. Many cat food brands advertise chicken, beef, and tuna flavored cat food because they know that cats need protein and cat owners are looking for quality cat food. However, you need to make sure the cat food you buy has a sufficient amount of cat food regardless of what flavor it is.

Cat Food Info #2 Cat Food with Taurine

Also check the cat food you typically buy for an amino acid called taurine. This particular amino acid is very important in the overall health of your cat, and your cat will eat as much food as it has to in order to supplement this particular amino acid. So, if you are buying cheap cat food that does not have the proper nutrients your cat will eat a lot. If you buy a nutrient rich cat food then your cat will eat little and save you more money while still getting proper nutrition.

Cat Food Info #3 Canned Cat Food or Dry Cat Food?

Many people do not know whether they should buy canned or dry cat food, or whether it even matters. Because of this, many people simply buy the cat food that is most affordable or convenient for them. This is actually a mistake. Cats should be fed a mixture of cat food. The dry cat food should be given for free feeding, especially if you are away on vacation or out for the day. Canned cat food should be supplemented at other times as well because it has water in the food and significantly more protein than the carbohydrate rich dry cat food. Not to mention the same food over and over might bore your cat and cause him to stop eating that cat food altogether.

Cat Food Info #4 Avoid Cat Food Fillers

Cats need to eat a cat food that is rich in protein, so make sure the amount of fillers is kept to a minimum. Carbohydrates are not essential for a cat’s existence, so don’t buy cat food that is full of them. Instead, read labels and buy cat food that is not filled with fillers and other by products.

The Pet Food Ingredient Game

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

About 25 years ago I began formulating pet foods at a time when the entire pet food industry seemed quagmire and focused on such things as protein and fat percentages without any real regard for ingredients. Since boot leather and soap could make a pet food with the “ideal” percentages, it was clear that analytical percentages do not end the story about pet food value. I was convinced then, as I am now, that a food can be no better than the ingredients of which it is composed. Since this ingredient idea has caught on in the pet food industry, it has taken on a commercial life that distorts and perverts the meaning of the underlying philosophy of food quality and proper feeding practices. Is health reducible to which ingredients a commercial product does or does not have? As contradictory as it may seem to what I have just said, no it is not. Here’s why.

AAFCO Approval

The official Publication of the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) gives wide latitude for ingredients that can be used in animal foods. As I have pointed out in my book, The Truth About Pet Foods, approved ingredients can include*:

dehydrated garbage

undried processed animal waste products

polyethylene roughage replacement (plastic)

hydrolyzed poultry feathers

hydrolyzed hair

hydrolyzed leather meal

poultry hatchery by-product

meat meal tankage

peanut hulls

ground almond shells

(*Association of American Feed Control Officials, 1998 Official Publication)

Simultaneously, this same regulatory agency prohibits the use of many proven beneficial natural ingredients that one can find readily available for human consumption such as bee pollen, glucosamine, L-carnitine, spirulina and many other nutraceuticals. It would be easy to conclude that reason does not rule when it comes to what officially can or cannot be used in pet foods.

From the regulators’ standpoint, they operate from the simplistic nutritional idea that the value of food has to do with percentages and that there is no special merit to any particular ingredient. They deny the tens of thousands of scientific research articles proving that the kind of ingredient and its quality can make all the difference in terms of health. They also are silent about the damaging effect of food processing and the impact of time, light, heat, oxygen and packaging on nutritional and health value.

The 100% Complete Myth

Consumers are increasingly becoming alert to the value of more natural foods. Everyone intuitively knows that the closer the diet is to real, fresh, wholesome foods, the better the chance that good health will result. Unfortunately, people do not apply this same common sense to pet foods. Instead they purchase “100% complete” processed foods, perhaps even going the extra mile and selecting “super premium” or “natural” brands, thinking they are doing the best that can be done. They surrender their mind to a commercial ploy (100% completeness) and do to their pets what they would never do to themselves or their family – eat the same packaged product at every meal, day in and day out. No processed food can be “100% complete” because there is not a person on the planet who has 100% knowledge of nutrition. The claim on its face is absurd. Understanding this simple principle is more important than any pet food formulation regardless of the merits of its ingredients. Everything that follows will begin with that premise, i.e., no food should be fed exclusively on a continuous basis no matter what the claims of completeness or ingredient quality.

Genetics Is The Key

Pets need the food they are biologically adapted to. It’s a matter of context. Just as a fish needs to be in water to stay healthy, a pet needs its natural food milieu to be healthy. All creatures must stay true to their design. What could be more obvious or simple? For a carnivore the correct genetic match is prey, carrion and incidental fresh plant material, and even some fur and feathers, as well as the occasional surprise of unmentionables found in decaying matter. It’s not a pretty picture to think that “FiFi” with her pink bow and polished toenails would stoop to such fare, but that is precisely the food she is designed to eat. Since that is her design, matching food to that design (minus the more disgusting and unnecessary elements) is also the key to her health.

The Disease Price

We may prefer to feed a packaged, sterile, steam- cleaned, dried, farinaceous chunk cleverly shaped like a pork chop, but let’s not kid ourselves, that is not the food a pet is designed for….regardless of the claims about ingredients on the label making one think it is five-star restaurant fare. Pets may tolerate such food for a time, but in the end nature calls to account. The price to be paid is lost health in the form of susceptibility to infections, dental disease, premature aging, obesity, heart and organ disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis and other cruel and painful chronic degenerative diseases. Because our pets are not out in the rigors of nature where they would quickly succumb to such conditions and end their misery, they languish in our protected homes and under veterinary care that does not usually cure but merely treats symptoms and extends the time of suffering. That suffering begins with the way in which we are feeding our pets, not the ingredients in a supposed 100% complete pet food.

The Perfect Food

What is the solution? It is simple and something I have been preaching for the past 25 years. Return pets to their environmental roots. They need – daily – interesting activity, fresh air, clean water, romps in nature, lots of love, and food as close to the form they would find in the wild as possible. Fresh, whole natural foods fit for a carnivore and fed in variety are as good as it can get. Anything less than that is a compromise. Compromise the least if health is the goal. (Same principle applies to you and your family.) To get a packaged food as close as possible to that goal requires the right starting philosophy of feeding (described above) and the expertise to design and manufacture such foods.

Enter The Profiteers

Elements of these principles (often distorted or misunderstood) have been taken up by an endless line of pet food entrepreneurs. The low fat craze led to low fat pet foods. The high fiber craze led to high fiber pet foods. The “no corn, wheat or soy” craze led to no corn, wheat or soy pet foods. The “omega- 3″ craze led to pet foods with fish oil. The “variety” craze led to pet foods supposedly offering variety. The “four food groups” craze led to all four bundled into a package. The “raw” craze has led to raw frozen pet foods. The list is endless and the race for pet owner dollars is at a fever pitch.

One can only feel sympathy for a concerned pet owner as they stroll along the huge array of pet food options in pet food aisles. Unfortunately, armed with only sound bites and lore they may have heard from a friend, breeder, veterinarian or on a commercial, they make choices that not only do not serve the health of their pet but may directly contribute to weakened immunity and disease.

The first thing consumers should keep in mind is the ideal diet for pets as described above. No packaged product regardless of its wild claims is ever going to equal that. The next best thing is to home prepare fresh meals. (Contact Wysong for recipes and instruction.) If that is not always possible, then products should be selected that are as close to the ideal as possible. (More suggestions below.)

Raw Frozen Pet Food Dangers

At first glance, considering the perfect feeding model I have described – raw, natural, whole – the best food may seem to be one of the raw frozen pet foods now clamoring to capture the “raw” craze. I’m sorry to say that some of these purveyors even use my books and literature to convince pet owners that their frozen products are on track. They take bits and pieces of good information and distort it into something that pretty much misses the point and misleads consumers. Also, these exotic frozen mixtures of ingredients of unknown origin, manufacturing and freezing conditions are most certainly not economical nor the best choice. They may, because of the water content and raw state, be outright dangerous.

Human Grade

Then there are claims about “USDA approved” ingredients, “human grade” ingredients and ingredients purchased right out of the meat counter at the grocery store. Again, at first glance – and superficiality is what marketers like to deal with – it may seem that such foods would have merit over others. But such labels only create a perception of quality. People would not consider the food pets are designed for in the wild – whole, raw prey and carrion – “human grade” or “USDA approved.” Because something is not “human grade” does not mean it is not healthy or nutritious. For example, chicken viscera is not “human grade” but carries more nutritional value than a clean white chicken breast. Americans think that chicken feet would not be fit for human consumption but many far eastern countries relish them. On the other hand, “human grade” beef steaks fed to pets could cause serious nutritional imbalances and disease if fed exclusively. Pet foods that create the superficial perception of quality (USDA, human grade, etc.) with the intent of getting pet owners to feed a particular food exclusively is not what health is about.

Pet Nutrition Is Serious Health Science

Pet nutrition is not about marketing and who can make the most money quickly. Unfortunately an aspiring pet food mogul off the street can go to any number of private label manufacturers and have a new brand made. These manufacturers have many stock formulas that can be slightly modified to match the current market trend. Voilà! A new pet food wonder brand is created.

Pet foods are about pet nutrition, and nutrition is a serious health matter. There is an implied ethic in going to market with products that can so seriously impact health. But the ethic is by and large absent in the pet food industry. Starting with the 100% claim and on to all the fad driven brands that glut the shelves, health is not being served. Nobody other than our organization is teaching people the principles I am discussing here. Instead, companies headed by people with no real technical, nutritional, food processing or health skills put themselves out to the public as serious about health … because that is what the public wants to hear and what sells. Never mind whether producers really understand or can implement healthy principles. The façade sells and selling is the game. Ingredients are important, true, but not less important than the expertise and principles of the producer who is choosing them, preparing, storing, processing and packaging them. Consumers place a lot of trust that nondescript processed nuggets are what consumers are being led to believe they are. Many a slip can occur between the cup and the lip. There are many slips that can occur between the cup of commercial claims and what ends up in the lips of the pet food bowl.

Consumer Blame

The consumer is not without guilt in this unfortunate – steady diet of processed pet food – approach to pet feeding. They want everything easy and inexpensive. They don’t want to learn or have to expend too much effort, and they want something simple to base decisions on like: “corn, wheat and soy are evil,” or “USDA approved,” or “human grade” or “organic is good.” They also want something for nothing and think they can get it in a pet food. People want prime choice meats, organic and fresh foods all wrapped up tidy in an easy open, easy pour package, hopefully for 50 cents a pound. They may even pay $1 or a little more if the producer can convince them about how spectacular their product is or how much cancer their pet will get if they choose another brand.

Are By-Products Evil?

In the processing of human foods there are thousands of tons of by-products that cannot be readily sold to humans. Does that make them useless or even inferior? No. Such by-products could include trimmings, viscera, organs, bones, gristle and anything else that humans do not desire. Should these perfectly nutritious items be buried in a landfill? As I mentioned above, while Earth’s resources continue to decline and people starve around the globe, should we feed our pets only “human grade” foods and let perfectly edible – and sometimes even more nutritious – by-products go to waste? How is that conscionable or justifiable for either the consumer or the producer?

Road Kill and Euthanized Pets

This shift to “human grade” for pet foods is partly due to a variety of myths that have gotten much stronger legs than they deserve. Lore has spread in the marketplace that road kill and euthanized pets are used in pet foods. I have never seen the proof for this outrageous claim and after twenty years surveying ingredient suppliers I have never found a supplier of such. However, fantastic myths easily get life and the more fantastic they are the more life they have. It’s the intellectually lazy way and what lies at the root of so much misery. Sloppy superficial thinking is what leads to racism, sexism, religious persecution and wars. People would like to think the world is sharply divided into right-wrong, good-evil, black-white. Marketers capitalize on this by trying to create such sharp distinctions for consumers to easily grab on to: human grade = good/all others = evil; organic = right/all others = wrong; rice = white/corn and wheat = black. Such simplistic and naïve distinctions are quick and simple for advertisers and salespeople to use to sway public opinion. But nobody stepping back and using common sense would ever think that something as complex as health could ever come from what is or is not in a processed bag of food. Reality is not black or white; it is in shades of gray. Grayness requires some knowledge, judgment and discernment before making choices. It’s a little more work but is what we all must do if the world is ever to be a better place and people and pet health are to improve.

What To Do

How do concerned pet owners wanting to cut through all the marketing clutter negotiate a path? It is very simple if the basic principles I have discussed above are kept in mind. Here are tips on how to implement an intelligent health and feeding philosophy:

1. Learn how to feed fresh food. Alternate these with honest processed foods fed in variety, and complement these foods with well- designed supplements.

[How To Apologize To Your Pet]

http://www.wysong.net/PDFs/apology_pamphlet.pdf

Don’t get all particular and paranoid about balancing nutrients and ingredient do’s and don’ts. Rotate, vary, mix it up and fast once in a while. Trust in nature, not some marketing hype. (Use the same principles for yourself and your family if you want optimal health as well.)

2. If you must have human grade or organic foods for your pet, go buy the real thing at the grocery meat counter. Take it home, cut it up and feed it raw. Freeze the remainder into small meal portions and use them for subsequent meals. Don’t turn your brain off and go buy “organic” or “human grade” pet foods that for their cost could only contain hints of the real thing. Pet food manufacturers may be clever at marketing, but they are not magicians. One thing is certain; they do not buy ingredients and then sell them to you for less than what they buy them for.

3. Use appropriately designed supplements such as Call Of The Wild™ and Wild Things™ to balance raw meals and help make them safe if you are not skilled at such meal preparation.

4. The best raw, processed food alternative to fresh foods from the grocer is non-thermally processed dry foods – not raw frozen ones. (See Wysong Archetype™.) Use this food for alternate meals and as top dressing to heat processed foods.

5. Check the credentials of the person making the decisions in the company whose products you buy. Don’t go to a plumber for brain surgery and don’t expect serious healthy products from business people.

6. Steer away from brands that are pushing any particular hot buttons such as “natural,” “no by- products,” exotic ingredients (quail eggs, watermelon, persimmons, etc.), organic, omega-3, rice and the like. Although these features may bring some merit to a food (if they are put in at other than “pinch” levels), they are not an end in themselves and if the packaged food is fed exclusively can cause more harm than good.

7. Steer away from brands that fear monger. For example, there is the no corn or wheat scam – “buy our brand; it has no corn or wheat.” (Just saying a product has “no” something is enough to scare the non-thinking public to the brand that doesn’t have the boogeyman ingredient. Profiteers know this and play it to the hilt in the pet food industry.) The truth is, grains are put in dried nugget foods because they contain the starch necessary for the extrusion process. Starch is pretty much starch regardless of whether it comes from corn, wheat, rice, potatoes, millet or whatever. Grains also help decrease the cost of pet foods. They contribute some nutrition but in a properly formulated meat-based pet food the majority of the nutritional value comes from the meat. It is true that animals may develop allergy to corn or wheat but that can happen with rice or any other grain or ingredient as well. Problems are prevented by varying the diet. That is why Wysong has developed the range of formulations it has and puts them in small portion packs so the foods can be rotated. Of all the Wysong formulations, the ones with corn are chosen on almost a 5:1 ratio over all others and are the diets we receive the thousands of raves about, even in those pets supposedly allergic to corn!

[Wysong Testimonials]

This is not to tout the merit of corn, or any grain in pet food for that matter. They are sort of a necessary evil in dried extruded foods and any of them can bring some benefit if rotated in the diet.

8. Do not feed any product exclusively. Variety is the spice of nutrition and the road to good health.

9. Features to look for in a packaged product would be those that bring the product close to the raw-whole-fresh-natural standard described above: active enzymes, probiotics cultures, natural preservation and protection against food-borne pathogens, proper packaging, intelligent formulation and balance, micronutrient dense, freshly produced, fresh ingredients – and the expertise to do all of this, not just say so on a package or brochure. (Some brands trying to get on the raw food bandwagon make outright false claims about “cold” processing.)

10. The company should be able to intelligently explain what they are doing in terms of processing, packaging, product preservation and prevention of food-borne pathogens. It is one thing to simply put a certain ingredient into a food, quite another to protect it until it is consumed. For example, Wysong owns its own manufacturing facilities in order to go beyond industry standard techniques. Special portion pack, light- and oxygen- barrier bags, modified atmosphere flush and natural ingredients to prevent oxidation and food- borne pathogens are part of all Wysong products. (See technical monographs on Packaging, Antioxidants and Wyscin™.)

11. Most important, learn. Support a company that helps you learn the truth and teaches you how to be at least somewhat independent of commercial products. Demand that producers provide proof for their claims in the form of good logic, evidence and science. Try to discern the company’s true motives, your pocketbook or your pet’s health. Learn how to go beyond The Pet Food Ingredient Game.

Research an Establishment’s Quality Before Dining Out

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

In today’s economy, dining out can still be accomplished with the right choices and research beforehand. Paramount to dining experience is choosing a place that appeals to both your sense of taste, and sense of atmosphere. A good establishment will work hard to both feed you well, as well as your comfort and ease levels. Great service, combined with great food and a great atmosphere are all equally important in deciding on what restaurant to dine out at. Your money is valuable, and hard earned, and should be spent in a place that will return the investment well.

When choosing a restaurant for dining out, many things are to be considered. In a good establishment, someone will be readily available to greet and seat you quickly. Your seating needs and requests should be fulfilled considerately. Extremely important to a good Dining Out experience is an establishment with knowledgeable and friendly servers. Specials and deals should be pointed out by the servers, and any questions that the guest has should be accurately answered. The server should be attentive to a guest’s needs, and never let the guest have to vie for the notice of the server.

Another piece of information that must be considered before dining out at a specific place is the actual establishment itself. Any health inspections must have been passed, and the place should be noted to be clean overall. The guest bathrooms should be readily available, clean, and well lit as well. If music is played, it should fit the theme or decor of the place, and not be so loud as to extinguish conversation.

Last, but perhaps the most important, research food quality and prices before dining out. Although individual’s tastes can differ greatly, checking reviews of specific places is a great way to scope the quality of the food. Seek reviewers with similar tastes as yours by finding reviews you would have given an establishment you have previously visited. And never forget to check the prices of courses at specific places! In this day and age, many places have their menu listed online, and this can be a great way to plan out a meal before leaving your own home to dine out. Though all of these great tips for dining out seem tedious, they are much less time consuming than going to an unfamiliar establishment that you end up greatly disliking. These tips can save you both your money, and time!

Building an AdSense Business With Free Blogs

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

I feel like it’s about time that I paid back to the community for all of the knowledge and help that I received along the way. Hopefully this post will help you get started in the AdSense business even if you have little or no money to spare but desperately want to try your hand at it.

Normally Google won’t approve AdSense applications for free websites, but there is one exception. So if you’re short on cash for hosting and are eager to get started, you might give this a try.

Blogger.com Blogs

Not long after Google bought Blogger.com, they made AdSense available to Blogger blog owners. Blogger is great because it has an easy interface, Google and Yahoo crawl the blogs quickly, and best of all if you’re broke–they’re free, and Google loves to give out AdSense accounts to Blogger owners. :)

So if you’re looking to get started with AdSense and not spend much money, Blogger is a great way to get started.

Before I talk about how to setup a Blogger blog for AdSense, though, let me tell you what an RSS feed is and how it works. If you already know this you can skip ahead. I make reference to this in the setup instructions, so it’s important to understand.

An RSS feed (as it applies to a blog) is basically a list of all of the recent posts made to your blog. People can use “RSS Aggregators” (software that continually checks up on your RSS feed to see if there’s anything new) to keep up with new posts on your blog. Websites will also want to publish your RSS feed on their sites if your content is good. This gives them fresh content for their visitors. And we all know that content is King in the world of website building.

Blogger blogs come with an RSS feed built-in, and you can use this to your advantage to generate traffic to your blog. I’ll discuss that in a bit, but first let’s get into building the blog.

Create Your Blogger.com Account

Determine Your Blog Topic First

Before you create the blog, you need to figure out what topic the blog will focus on. Think about your skills or hobbies that you’re really good at. You might not be a mechanic, but if you’re really good at working on cars on the weekend, and you love to do it, that would make a great blog topic. Brainstorm your skills and interests to determine what you would enjoy writing about. It’s important that you like to write about it, since you will have to do so to build up the blog!

I will say this: If you have some knowledge on a commercial or industrial topic, this will usually get higher paying AdSense ads. But a hobby blog can do very well also (I know this from experience!).

Create the Blog

Once you have a topic chosen, it only takes about 5 minutes to setup a blog. From the Blogger homepage click the “Create Your Blog Now” link and follow the blog wizard instructions. I won’t get into detail about them because it’s pretty straight-forward, but there are a few points I want to make.

First of all, when you choose your blog URL, make sure that the URL contains the keywords for your topic. For example, if you’re creating a blog about health insurance, “healthinsurance.blogspot.com” is ideal, or “health-insurance” or even “health-insurance-blog” or “health-insurance-12345”. Just make sure that your keywords are in the URL, that will help you be found when people search for your keywords in the search engines.

Also, be sure to pick one of the professional looking templates. I suggest you just pick the plain-white one that is first in the list of templates when you’re creating the blog. Once the blog is created, then click on the “Templates” tab and select one of the nicer ones shown there. I’m not sure why Blogger doesn’t show you all of the available templates in the blog setup wizard, but they don’t.

The Settings Tab.

A discussion of the important points of each settings tab is outlined below.

Basic

On the “Basic” settings tab, set your blog title to the keywords you want to show up for in the search engines. That will help you get ranked.

Give a good, detailed description about the benefits of reading your blog daily. You want to get people to add your RSS feed to their aggregators and websites so you can get traffic, and this will help.

Answer “Yes” to the question “Add your Blog to our listings?”. This will have your blog appear on the main page of Blogger when you make new posts (albeit for a brief period of time), and allow people to search and find your blog using Blogger’s search tool.

One other, lesser known detail about setting that question to “Yes” is that if you set it to “No” Blogger will shove “nofollow/noindex” meta-tags into your blog template header, which will prevent your site from getting crawled or indexed. I believe this was done to fight what Blogger called “spam blogs”.

Publishing

Set the “Notify Weblogs” setting to “Yes”. This will send a notification to Weblogs every time you make a new post. Weblogs is a site that lets people (and search engine crawlers) know when new content appears on a blog. You want the crawlers (and visitors) to hit your pages when you add new content, so be sure this is set to Yes.

Formatting

You can do what you want on this tab–I personally set the number of posts on the main page to between three and five.

Comments

Allow comments unless your blog topic is really controversial and you’re likely to get a lot of flaming (people lashing out at you for what you have to say). Allowing comments is good because it gives more food to the search engines and keeps your blog updating and fresh even when you’re not posting to it.

I usually let anyone comment, and don’t limit it.

Don’t show the comments in a pop-up window, because that will prevent the crawlers from being able to get to the content since it’s javascript-based.

If you’re concerned that people might flame you, but you want to allow comments, enable comment moderation so that you have to approve each comment that is added before it goes live.

If you want to be notified when a comment is made, set the Comment Notification Address to your email address.

Archiving

Set your archiving to daily if you post every day, or weekly if you only post every few days. If you post every day daily is the best way to go, because it gives the search engines more unique pages to crawl and index. More unique content means more traffic to your blog and more clicks on your AdSense ads (I’ll get to adding your AdSense to the template in a bit).

If you don’t do a daily archive (and maybe even if you do), enable post pages so that each post will still have its own unique page even if multiple posts appear on the same archive page. Having multiple posts on one archive page is not a bad thing if you have post pages enabled, since the posts tied all together make for yet another unique page on the blog.

Site Feed

Definitely enable the site feed. If your posts tend to be very short, you might enable full descriptions. But if you have long posts (which I recommend), do not enable the full feed, use the short feed. Here’s why:

If you put the full post in your RSS feed, then the person reading the feed doesn’t have a reason to go back to your blog since they have already read the full post. No visitors to the blog means no clicks on your ads. AdSense has an “AdSense For Feeds” in beta testing, but it’s not open to all publishers yet, so at least for now you need to induce people to visit the blog.

If they can only read part of the blog post, then if they want the whole story they will need to go to your blog. You can plan for this by making sure that your title and the first 255 characters (about the first 50 words) really pull in the reader’s attention. You need to use those first 50 words to make them just have to read the rest.

Also, if your RSS feed appears on websites, you don’t want to give away the farm by showing the whole post. You’re letting websites use your feed so you can get clicks on the posts in that feed and get visitors to your site to build AdSense revenue.

So set the “Descriptions” to Short, write long posts and make the title and the first 50 words count.

The Templates Tab

If you haven’t already picked a nice template from the list, click on the “Pick New” link under the templates tab and select one of the templates that you like and that fits your topic.

If you don’t already have an AdSense account, you can click on the “AdSense” link and apply for one straight from the blog instead of having to go to Google.com to apply. That’s how badly Google wants Blogger blog owners to use AdSense on their blogs! :)

Once you’ve done that, it’s time to paste your AdSense code into your template. Click on the “Edit Current” link if you’re not already there.

There are two methods of setting up your template. You will generate the most clicks by doing the following:

1) Find the section of the template that looks like this:

<!-- Begin #main - Contains main-column blog content --> <div id="main"> <div id="main2"> <p>2) Paste your AdSense code for a 336&#215;280 large rectangle directly after the second <div> tag. Be sure to format the colors of the AdSense to blend in with the background of your blog for maximum results. </p> <p>3) Optionally, if you want to show a second 336&#215;280 block at the bottom of the list of posts, look for this code in the template: </p> <p><xmp>

Put your AdSense code between the

tag and the first

tag.

Click the “Preview” button to make sure the AdSense blocks look correct and did not mess up the look of the template. If all is well, click “Save Template Changes”.

Note: Once you’ve made changes to your template, if you go and select a different template with the “Pick New” link it will overwrite your changes and you will have to put your AdSense code back into the template.

Setup Your Profile

Once your blog is setup, you want to setup your profile. To do this, click the “Back to Dashboard” link at the top of the browser window. Once at the dashboard, click on the “Edit Profile” link in the right hand column.

Check the “Share my Profile” box, and the “Show my Real name” box, unless you have a really good reason not to. It helps build trust if you have this information showing on your blog because people can see you’re a real person and not some anonymous nobody. Your profile by default will be shown on your blog.

If you don’t mind people contacting you via email, you can select “Show my email address”.

Click “Select blogs to display” and make sure that your new blog is checked.

If you have a photograph somewhere on a website, you can point to it with the Photo URL. I recommend doing this because again, it builds trust and makes you more real and personal to your readers. If you don’t have a picture on the web, or don’t have a website, I’ll gladly host a picture of you on one of my servers for free. Sticky-mail me and we’ll arrange it. Just one of my little ways of paying back to the Webmasterworld community. :)

Go through and fill out the rest of the information. Focus on the “About Me” box, because that will show on your blog pages. Use that description to establish yourself as an expert on the topic that your blog is about. People like to know that they’re reading an expert opinion that they can trust. This box is your chance to prove you have an expert opinion!

Save your profile when you’re finished.

Getting Traffic to Your Blog

Once your blog is properly configured, spend about a week making a good, informative post or two per day. You don’t want to go advertising an empty blog, so it pays to make some good posts first.

You can post to the blog by clicking the “Posting” tab. Make your title be eye-catching while still containing the keywords that the post is most relevant to. For example, if your post is going to be about how to build blue widgets from scratch, and you want to be found when people search the engines for “Build blue widgets”, try and make your title at least start with those keywords. For example, “Build blue widgets – from scratch”. The dashes help the search engines differentiate the keywords from the rest of the title.

You might get some stray traffic from people searching for blogs on Blogger, and your posts appearing in the “most recent posts” list, so don’t be surprised if you get some traffic and AdSense clicks even before you start advertising.

Submit Your Blog to Blog Directories

To get the traffic rolling you need to submit your blog’s RSS feed to as many Blog Directories as you can. If you search Google for “RSS submission site”, the number one result as of right now lists off 55 directories that you can submit your feed to.

With a Blogger blog, your RSS feed is always your blog url plus “/atom.xml”. For example, if your blog url is:

http://myblog.blogspot.com/

Your RSS feed url is:

http://myblog.blogspot.com/atom.xml

This is very important, because it will help attract the attention of the search engines as well as get your blog noticed by people who are searching for information and for content for their websites.

All of this will result in getting in-bound links to your site. Most people will use the title of your blog as the link text for the link to your site, and that’s why it’s important for your title to be the keywords that you want your blog homepage to rank for in the search engines. Having in-bound links that contain the keywords you want to rank for is a very powerful way to get ranked well. I have blogs that rank on the first page of search results for my keywords because of this (some even in the first or second position).

But you don’t want to sit around and wait for the links to start to gather. You want to…

Trade Links With Related Websites

Another thing I do to help get my blog ranked is to trade links with other webmasters who have sites on similar topics. I find them by searching for the keywords I want to rank for. If the blog category is not a competitive, commercial category, you can write directly to the webmasters of the top 20 – 50 results and see if they will exchange links with you.

If it’s a more competitive, commercial category, you can find out who links to the top websites for your keywords by searching for “link:[http://www.yourcompetitor.com/]”. That will show a list of URLs that link to your competition. Write to the webmasters who own those linking sites and see if they will trade links with you, too.

When you request a link exchange, be sure and make the request personal. Mention something that you like about the webmaster’s site and why you think that your blog is a good match for a link. You might even go a step further and put up a link to the webmaster’s site before emailing them. That way you can say “I’ve already put up a link to your site on my blog and wanted to see if you felt that my blog was a good match for a link back from your site”–or something like that. Take the first step, it’s a good gesture and it helps you get more links. Of course, if they don’t agree you can always take their link down. ;)

If they agree to exchange links, make sure that you have them link to your site using the keywords that you want to rank for. For example, if you want your blog to rank well for “Home Made Widgets”, be sure to have them use the link text “Home Made Widgets”.

You can manually insert the webmaster’s link and description text into your blog by modifying your template. I try to put it in the left or right hand column just below the archive links. To do this, modify your template and look for this code:

And finally, below the links, add this:

Every time you make a new link exchange with a webmaster, just go in and repeat the

  • code with the new link and description just above the tag.

The more competitive your blog topic is, the more links you will need to get to rank well. But if your posts are informative, witty and humorous where appropriate, word will soon spread about your blog and your traffic will grow as people link to you without you even asking for a link. Growth in traffic means growth in AdSense revenue.

    Concluding Comments

I hope this tutorial will help some of you who are on a restricted budget and just getting started with AdSense to start making some money by creating quality blogs at Blogger.

It takes some time and effort to make good informative posts, but once you have learned to create one successful blog you can repeat the process and create another, and another, until you achieve enough success to start putting up your blogs at your own domain name instead of “yourblog.blogger.com”. Blogger lets you do that, too, but that’s a subject for another post. :)

    Here’s to your success!

High School Superstar – College Nobody

    Saturday, January 7th, 2012

The superstar athlete who has received every award, all the praise from fans and admirers and hangers-on now has to live up to all of the hype and produce at the college level. Many great high school players sometimes do not make the transition to college superstar status. In high school, many of these superstar athletes were the best on their teams, they showed great athletic ability, superior athletic skills and, at game time, no one could compete with them.

These athletes stood alone; they were unmatched because there was no competition for them to worry about. As these athletes compete, they gain confidence knowing that they are the best in their city and in their community. They shine head and shoulders above everyone who plays their sport. The transition to college, in their minds, will be easy because they have had it easy their entire athletic career while in high school.

These days, athletes receive so much coverage from so many places; magazines, website message boards, they are written about on blogs and talked about on TV as though they were the greatest athlete to have ever played. This type of hype can be dangerous when dealing with teenagers who have no life experience and may not be able to handle the pressure.

All of their athletic lives, they felt no pressure and they’ve dealt with very little adversity because, as a superior athlete, everything is given to you–everything in the sport world is easy. The transition to college can be difficult for many student athletes who have never lived away from home or dealt with the adversity because once you are at a college athletic program, all the players are good, all the players were also the best at their respective schools therefore, the competition is greater than many of these athletes has ever had to deal with–ever.

For every Lebron James who was a superstar basketball player, there are millions more who wish to be like a Lebron James but fail to achieve any level of success. All over the country, student athletes from all sports believe in their minds that they too will be a success at the college level; they believe college athletics will come easy to them just like it did in high school. Ego plays a large part in athletic failure.

When you are successful in your sport and everyone is telling you how good you are all the time, you develop a huge ego. You feel that you can do no wrong and success is given to you because of your tremendous talent for athletics. Why is the pressure to succeed in college so great? The answer is over-exposure of high school athletes. There is more media coverage of athletes than there has ever been in the history of sports.

Athletes are given rating points, they’re given ranking on their athletic abilities and skills, their college programs of interest are listed everywhere and are discussed on message boards websites and blogs. The coverage of these high school athletes is so over the top, they are treated like they are a lottery tickets that some college programs try to cash in.

The pressure on a teenager is ridiculous. Many of the fans of the game fail to realize that these are teenagers and, as fans, treat them as though they are professional athletes. Having to live up to high expectations placed on student athletes from fans who enjoy sports must be incredible to deal with for some athletes. High school sports, college sports, and professional sports is all about having the best players and winning.

If you were very good in high school, chances are that you may be a success at the college level and, there is a possibility that you may reach the professional level. But what happens if you never achieve college success? Then your name is forgotten faster than you can imagine. I often wondered how the fascination with high school athletes who play sports, reach this level of over-hypeness and overwhelming exposure? I think the answer is way back in the day when there was no coverage of prep athletes. Sure, their names appeared in the papers and maybe something was said about them on TV but that was it. Much of the information about high school players 40 to 50 years ago was passed around via word-of-mouth.

From game to game the fans would talk about their favorite high school player and this created buzz in the high school athletic community. At your school, you were the “big man on campus” so to speak; everyone knew your name, new what you did in the last game and that started a conversation about players at your school versus players at other schools.

The conversation about which players in high school were better became a fascination of fans that enjoyed high school sports. Back in those days, there were not a lot of print publications dedicated solely to prepl sports. As the fascination of sports grew, various publications started to cover these athletes because of the success many of them were having in high school and college. As there was more involvement in sports from our young men and women, there came a greater need to know who these athletes were and who was better.

The fans wanted to know where they were going to college and the hype of student athletes grew into what it is today. For many athletes, were viewed as their ticket to college success. A college scholarship carries the status of successful athlete. Keep in mind, every athlete who plays a sport in college does not receive a scholarship. The pressure to get an athletic scholarship for some is huge because if you receive a full college scholarship to a major university you’re viewed as a success. If you fail to receive a college scholarship, in some communities, you were viewed as a failure.

Therefore, the pressure to succeed in high school is greater because of the expectations placed on these athletes from the hype machine that covers the high school athletes. Parents have been known to place unnecessary amounts of pressure on their kids who happen to possess superior athletic abilities and parents understand the importance of receiving a full athletic scholarship. Many parents will invest thousands of dollars into their child’s athletic future if they believe they have athletic talent to reach the college level.

Parents understanding the value of a college scholarship and will put their hard-earned dollars into their kids looking for a return on their investment.

The investment is years of summer camps, specialized training camps, personal coaching, equipment, supplies, travel–all of this is a huge investment for many parents and these same parents are looking for a huge return on the money spent. Most investing parents feels that they were somehow cheated by high school coaches whose job it is to coach their sons and daughters to become better athletes so they can reach a college level and, when that is not achieved, these parents are very upset and angry.

High school athletes: just that name alone carries added responsibilities and pressure. When those expectations fall short at the college level, the added responsibilities of these athletes are quickly forgotten. These high school athletes when entering college athletics, I believe, are somewhat unaware of the vast level of talent at the college level. Many student athletes believe that high school success can translate into their college success. The commitment that is placed upon studentl athletes who enter into major college athletics is huge. In high school, you went to class every day, you practiced after school and you went home and when the season was over, that was it-the season was over and you moved on to something else.

At the college level when the season ends, it’s really not over.

There are still training sessions, workout sessions, weight-lifting, studying, etc. The demands on a college athlete are enormous and there is very little free time with all the requirements and commitments that a college athlete must keep. Many college programs are practicing 20 hours a week, which is equivalent to the college athletes having a part-time job but, these athletes are not paid. During the college season, the pressures of a high school athlete who enters college can be daunting.

There is a pressure to prove that you belong in college and as an incoming high school superstar freshman, the expectations for them to perform can be overwhelming for some. Keep in mind, even at the college level these are still young people who are still learning their way in the world and may not be able to deal with certain things. We all remember their names once they become a success in college but we forget their names if they fail to reach any level of success.

Oftentimes, athletes will experience burnout. This is brought on because they were unable to live up to the high expectations placed on them by so many people. High school athletes and the college athletes who did not reach a high level of success will quit the game because of the enormous pressure placed on them their entire athletic lives.

It is not easy to be a superstar at the high school level. Any student athlete with some level of talent will, of course, want to compete at the Division I college level; anything less means they’re not that good anyway and this is the mindset of most athletes who have reached some level of success. The mindset of some high school athletes is, “If I can’t play D-I ball, I don’t want to play at all!”

Just imagine an athlete who has the size, the ability and talent but ends up being under-recruited by college programs; just think of the embarrassment that athlete feels or how that athlete’s parents, who have invested thousands of dollars, feel when that athlete does not reach the Division I level. Many college athletes will find it easier to quit and give the excuse of burnout than to play college athletics in a lower level college program. The road to big-time college athletics is littered with athletes who’ve never reached any level of success.

Go Kart Engine Repair – Ignition System Diagnostics and Repair Part 1

    Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Go Kart Engine Diagnostics: Solid State Ignition Failure Detection

I have had a couple of times where I had some dramatic failures occur on my go kart engines. One time I had a chain snap and the chain made a ferocious clunk and then fell off the go kart. The funny thing is that the engine kept running, and I had to shut it off.

I replaced the chain and ran into a peculiar problem. The engine would not start.

This is where most of us, with NO engine experience just throw up our hands and kick the go kart and go away. Then we throw it in the back of the pickup and bring it over to “Smokin Joes Lawnmower Repair.” There we spend about $200 to have the engine fixed.

I am here to tell you forget about going to “Smokin Joes.

First of all a basic understanding of ignition systems is required. (I am assuming that you understand the Otto Cycle or 4 cycle engine theory, so I will dispense with that SnoozeVille explanation)

Ignition systems are basically partial generators. The flywheel has a magnet, and the Magneto has a coil of wire in it.

The theory behind electric current is that when a wire (a simple wire ) is passed through a magnetic field that an electric current is induced into the wire.

And conversely, when a wire is induced with an electric current it gives off a magnetic field.

The Magneto (the device that the spark plug wire comes out of) has a coil of wire in it plus a core of iron to attract or concentrate the magnetic flux lines into the wire.

The wire then gets an instantaneous jump in electricity as the magnetic field in the flywheel passes by it. The sudden increase in electricity is concentrated as high voltage which is released as a spark in the spark plug.

The timing, or the firing of the electricity to the spark plug is regulated by circuitry. This particular circuitry is activated by a small magnetic sensing switch (which looks like a small cylinder of steel tucked in with the coil). When the magnet passes by the magnetic field activates the switch. The switch then releases the coil energy into the spark plug.

The spark plug is nothing more than a glorified jumping bridge for electricity. We all are familiar with this static discharge when we scrub our feet against the floor and the reach out and touch somebody. A spark jumps when we get close, like .125 inches and closer.

The design of the spark plug is to keep the electricity isolated up to the bridge. Once the electricity from behind shoves real hard, it forces the electrons in front to jump. Kind of like getting pushed off of a bridge.

So the white part of the spark plug is non-conductive and an insulator. The metal part is isolated from the rest of the spark plug and only becomes integral when spark completes the circuit or jumps across the gap.

Obviously, sparks cause the right concentration of Oxygen and Combustible gases or even dust, to ignite. Ignition is the excited state of electrons jumping from one molecule to another. This excited state releases heat and light: we call that flame or ionized gas.

Next time we will discuss how to trouble shoot the ignition system so that you do not have to pay Smokin Joes what you just have learned…and will learn.

Choose The Right Snow Skis – Part 2

    Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Due to the great variety of skis available, the beginner can easily become confused as to what equipment to get. Instead of buying a set of ski equipment right away, renting is a good option to consider. Here are some tips to help the beginning skier aong either path.

    Renting Ski Equipment

Beginning skiers are usually better off renting their ski equipment, for the first season at least. It can be an expensive mistake to buy boots, poles and a full set of skis, when you don’t yet have the experience to choose the proper equipment.

Ski resorts usually have very knowledgeable staffs in their rental shops. They can be very helpful in choosing appropriate equipment for each skier. They will take into account height, weight, skiing ability and skiing style, as well as the current snow conditions. The rental shop staff has no interest in pushing one brand over another, because once you pay the rental fee you have your choice of any equipment in the shop. Of course, the staff does have an interest in making the skiing experience as enjoyable as possible. If you enjoy yourself, you are more likely to come back and rent from them again.

Renting is a great way to enable you to try out various types of skis and boots to see which you prefer. If you start with short skis, try a slightly longer pair each time to see what the difference is. Experimenting with skis from various manufacturers and skis made of different materials will help when it comes time to buy your own equipment. By then you will know exactly what works for you.

    Buying Ski Equipment

After a couple of seasons of skiing, you will probably want your own equipment.

Information you’ll need to tell the sales person:

    - how the skis will be used — on or off trail, groomed snow or powder, speed or stability

    - your skiing ability

    - your height and weight

    - preferred length of skis

    - for woman or man.

The staff in the ski shop, usually seasoned skiers, will help you make a good choice in your purchase. Be sure to give them as many details as possible about your skiing ability and style. This will enable them to guide you toward a suitable pair of skis for your needs.

Due to modern ski technology, skis can be designed so that one pair can suit a variety of conditions and styles. Of course, there are still specialized skis for specific purposes. The beginner to intermediate skier should probably get a pair of skis that can be used almost anywhere to try out different types of skiing as you progress.

    Methodologies of Online Education

    Friday, December 16th, 2011

There were many myths and misconceived notions about online education until recent past. Some people believed that online learning is a good option only for students who have a good track record. It was also believed that only those students having access to computers and modern means of communication would benefit from online education. However, with time such notions are giving way to an open acceptance where people have started accepting online education as a viable alterative for conventional education.

Not all online education options have a similar methodology and approach. There are various modes of online education available and it would be better if you have an understanding of different methodologies in use by online education providers so that you can select the course with the methodology that suits you the best. Here we are discussing the learning methodologies for online education:

    Online Education Methodologies- Different Options

Live: This methodology is also known as synchronous mode of learning. In this mode of online education, there is instant communication between the students and teachers and at times even among different students. Herein all the participants get access to information simultaneously. Virtual classroom using the facility of video or audio conferencing and real-time chat are some examples of this mode of online education.

This learning methodology has its advantages and disadvantages. This mode is more akin to the conventional education except for the fact that the students don’t have to travel to the classrooms. The biggest advantage of synchronous method of online education is that it allows instant feedback for the student’s performance and allows active interaction among the students and teachers. Thus the students can get the training and education that is tailored suit their needs. Moreover, live education also facilitates the setting up of learning communities and groups for a better interaction among the learners.

This method has the disadvantage that the students cannot plan their schedule and they are bound by the pre-set schedule.

Asynchronous: Asynchronous mode of online education is popularly termed as store and forward education. In this method, the communication between the student and teacher is not instant. Self-paced courses are the examples of asynchronous online education where the students communicate with the teachers and amongst themselves by exchanging emails and posting messages on online bulletin boards and discussing groups. This is the more popular mode of online education because it offers more convenience and flexibility to the students and they can decide the pace and schedule for their education and training.

Despite of the advantages, this mode of online education has its disadvantages too. The students in this mode of learning, lack discipline and motivation and generally tend to develop a lackluster attitude towards education.

The mixed mode of learning in online education combines the advantages of both the modes and it is a combination of personal lectures or face-to-face interaction learning through online activities.

Now that you have a better understanding of different methodologies of online education, you can pick up the right one for you and enhance your skills.

How to Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking in Seven Powerful Steps

    Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Have you ever avoided a career or business opportunity because it required you to speak publicly?  Did you ever have a great idea you wanted to share in a group setting but didn’t because of your fear of speaking in front of a group of people?

You are not alone in the fear of public speaking.  In my travels, I have seen where the fear of public speaking have kept otherwise very successful people in all walks of life from achieving their full potential.  When you let this fear dominate your life, you lose out on promotions, business opportunities, community activities, and most of all self-confidence.

The following are seven powerful secrets to empowering you to overcome your fear of public speaking and achieving a new level of success in your career, your business, and your life:

    1. Ask Yourself the Important Question

Ask yourself, “Where does my fear come from and is it real?”  Was there a public speaking opportunity in the past that you think didn’t go well or that you felt was poorly prepared?  Maybe you had to stand up in front of your classmates in high school or college and someone made what you perceived as a negative comment concerning your presentation.  Maybe you gave a good speech but you started to over analyze every detail of the speech.

First, realize that whatever happened did so at another time and place and you are no longer that person.  With new experiences, you have grown into a more confident person with much to offer.  Second, embrace feedback, extract the true areas of improvement from the feedback and work to improve your public speaking ability.  Be honest and fair with yourself and determine if the feedback is coming from someone who is qualified to give quality feedback.  I had one presentation skills student whose manager told her she was a poor speaker because she moved her hands and arms during the presentation.  Was the manager giving qualified feedback?   Doubtful.  Yet, this manager’s feedback affected this employee in a negative way for years until the employee became my coaching student.

Again, separate qualified feedback from unqualified feedback and learn from it.  Also, don’t allow negative public speaking situations that happen in the past apply to your present or future public speaking opportunities.

    2. Face Your Fear of Public Speaking

The fastest way to overcome any fear, much less the fear of public speaking, is to face your fear and attack it. Look for and embrace opportunities to make presentations.  Start with non-threatening opportunities such as your children’s school meeting or a non-work related situation and work your way up to more important, high pressure situations such as work meetings.

Realize that each time you speak is an opportunity to improve your speaking ability.  Look at your public speaking skills as a muscle.  The more you exercise your public speaking muscle, the stronger it becomes and you will improve your speaking abilities.

Go into each public speaking opportunity with a clear set of goals.  Maybe for your first speech, you may have a goal of eliminating “hums” and “ahs.”  For another speech you may have a goal of completing your speech with a powerful ending.

    3. Visualize Your Public Speaking Success

Invest time the night before you speak to visualize what a successful speech looks, sounds, and feels like and how you will feel while giving it.  If you don’t see it yourself, it won’t happen.  Most presentations can be dramatically improved just by investing time ahead of the presentation to visualize a successful outcome.

    4. Master the Material

Invest the time to know what you are presenting.  Invest time to rehearse several variations of your speech.  Rehearse your speech as if something goes wrong.  What if your PowerPoint goes down, you forget a section in your speech, or someone heckles you?  How will you react?  If you know your material well enough, you will be able to overcome any presentation challenge.

    5. Master Your Public Speaking Mind

During a group coaching session, a presenter started speaking, made a mistake and promptly announced, “I hate speaking in public!”  In this instance, she did not manage her public speaking mind, and let her fear of public speaking take over her performance.

When you make negative statements concerning public speaking, it will reinforce your fear of public speaking.  Take the time to replace negative statements with positive public speaking affirmations.

    6. Take Time to Analyze Your Performance

In most cases, we are our own toughest critics when speaking. Whenever you speak, videotape or audiotape your presentations, sit down, and honestly analyze your performance.  Once you start to record your presentations, you will realize that some of the issues you were worried about aren’t in your speech and you will instantly see areas of improvement and address them accordingly.  As the old saying goes, “The video doesn’t lie.”

Ask for feedback from people you respect and who can give you quality, supportive feedback that will empower you to want apply the feedback in your next speech.  Before your speech, tell the person you ask to give you feedback what your public speaking goals are and what you are working to improve.

Once you analyze your areas of improvement, immediately go out and exercise your public speaking muscle and apply the improvement.

    7. Reward Yourself

Reward yourself for any improvements in your public speaking skills.  The reward is up to you, but make sure to immediately reward yourself.

Bonus Public Speaking Secret:  If you forget a word or a phrase during your speech, never apologize and keep speaking as though nothing happened.  Unless the audience has a detailed transcript of your speech, they won’t know what you forgot.  Don’t let the fear of forgetting something in your speech keep you from giving great speeches.

Now, go out and exercise your public speaking muscle to give outstanding presentations.  When you apply the seven secrets to overcoming your fear of public speaking, you will realize more opportunities and gain a new level of confidence.
